Crazy World

It's a crazy world
My ears are full of lies
It's a crazy world
I'd like to stay surprised

The stories unfold, a balance is struck
The shades of the moon go round
I left the old tales behind,
But found them elsewhere
Sunshine still blesses the ones who're unkind

It's a crazy world
My ears are full of lies
It's a crazy world
I'd like to stay surprised

He walked through her door as though it wasn't there,
as though he'd never heard the word 'no'.
What can she do when words don't make walls? She's been dealt such a terrible hand

It's a crazy world
My ears are full of lies
It's a crazy world
I'd like to stay surprised

I rest my confusion on this little child
At the centre of all that seems wrong
I try to forgive, for with all he denied her
He gave her his beautiful eyes

His beautiful eyes were all that he gave
He was changing it all, he said,
In the name of that old emotion...

Never was the word 'Love' so bent and so misused
Who'd give a flower with such a foul perfume?
I ask the stars: is it written on the earth?
It's a crazy world, for sure, for sure
It's a crazy world, for sure, for sure

Packer's Field

A factory bequeathed it
In trust to those who need it
Go back further still it's just a hill
Unfenced like all the earth until
The lords found wood and nails
And crucified all prior claims
So centuries on, that's still what's wrong

(It's got so) local's just a badge you wear
To show that you know how to care
The kids are kicked around and deified
It's all for them, all justified
As though when we're done gone and grown
Don't need to play or catch or throw
Praps if we did there'd be fewer kids
taking a hit cos they're all alone

The class today: Spell 'Privelege'
But only some can make it fit
And if you can't you build a fence
Just like the lords oh way back when

There are no heads buried in this clay sand
But so many hearts
Burned
and charred

It wasn't perfect here before
But it seems they're always wanting more
Set up a track for racing rats
Diss what you've got you won't want it back

Maybe a Mayday Funday call
A light before they close the door
The surveys and the questionnaires
Imagine this: we could all be heirs

Appeals to god appeals to law
All cos we can't sit down and talk
Resolve to share a simple park
The floodlight's on and we're in the dark

There are no heads buried in this clay sand
But so many hearts
Burned
and charred

Crows and magpies fightin in the graveyard
I cross to see what the fuss is about
Hey there I see a prowling fat cat on the out

Across the plum laden branches
The plots so well demanded
The clatter and the scrape

There are no heads buried with this claw hand
But so many hearts
Burned
and charred
There are no heads buried in this clay sand
But so many hearts
Burned
and charred

Back up there on Packer's Field
The gulls are picking off the seed
You can't keep three birds in the hand
So one thing's clear:
We've lost the land.

Chasing Hope

Stepped outside myself to get the lie of the land
Found the lies are so familiar, turned the front of my hand
Hepburn's in the swimming pool and Nero sniffs the air
I'm both of them while tulips bloom, just rocking the chair
A last resort I wrote I thought
you're my very last drop of hope
I'd sure lost the map to the well and back
Like I lost my old identity,
the certainty of righteous fury
Don't know if my letters ever made things any better
So please, don't talk about the war

Cos it's like chasing hope around the room
Just a little out of reach yeah this bird's always in flight
I'm chasing hope around the room
Just a little out of reach, just a little out of reach

Used to feed on emergencies to make it seem real
A 'something to believe in' imperfect ideal
I tried to grow my patience and I tried to grow a change
Swapped the kudos for a quiet life, I'm still out of range
Say what today is there new to do?
See I can't bear anything old
Is this grass at my feet down a cul-de-sac street?
Why should I leave my comfy fence
just cos they made a bigger mess?
You know I'm doing all I can
to put my own house in order,
So please don't talk about the war

Cos it's like chasing hope around the room
Just a little out of reach, yeah this bird's always in flight
I'm chasing hope around the room
Just a little out of reach, just a little out of reach

The papers count the marchers
and the marchers count themselves
The analysts count the analysts' inches
Counting the dead
A new response to war
could be none at all, or I could
Love more, drink less, smoke less and burn the toast less
Love more, drink less, dig for no-one's victory in far off deserts

I'm chasing hope around the room
Just a little out of reach yeah this bird's always in flight
I'm chasing hope around the room
Two million unlit matches and we all need a light

Jane had the radio til three a.m.
But I don't buy the paper just to read it again
The face that would sell it thinks our leaders are right
I wonder which of my enemies most deserves a fight
The rats haven't left this stinking ship,
they're just locking all the doors
Saying "Take 'em down with the poofs and the whores"
It's no comfort to me, rightwing christians ending up in purgatory
I don't know if these rages made those sorrows any smaller
so please, don't talk about the...
please, don't talk about the...
please, don't talk about the war.

Vertigo

Pink green and yellow stripes covered their walls
I tried to show them the window
but the window held truth
and the truth might have hurt
So they'll stay where they are, thank you
they'll stay where they are, thank you
Ooh-ooh La la la La la la

My secondhand hand me downs
These words could be yours
My secondhand hand me downs
I buy my words from corner stores
I hope they're the same ones as yours
I hope they're the same ones as yours
Ooh-ooh La la la La la la

We're living on an edge, you me and them,
We're living on an edge
We're living on the highest branch of the highest tree,
I've got vertigo, I've got vertigo

Living room sofas and cash for the cause,
I tried to show them the shoreline
But the swimmer got stuck, and they'd rather not save him
they'll stay where they are, thank you
they'll stay where they are, thank you
They'll stay where they are till they
Rot in the waste of their tabloid newspapers
They'll stay where they are,
And we'll all stay where we are
Vertigo, vertigo

We're living, we're living
We're living on the edge, you me and them
We're living on the edge
We're living on the highest branch of the highest tree,
I've got vertigo
I've got vertigo

I'm more scared of heights than the trouble they cause
I'm more scared of heights than the trouble they cause
My words don't equate with video games
My words don't equate with video games
Where peace is a four-letter word
Peace is a four-letter word

Vertigo, vertigo
I'm more scared of heights than the trouble they cause
I'm more scared of heights than the trouble they cause
The trouble they cause
Vertigo

Plot

There's a fence and a track down one side
But no way up this weedy incline
As I cut one the leaves seem to laugh
In just days there's no trace of my path
A strange cocktail awaits me outside
"Why bother?" their eyes seem to cry
"We've whipped and subdued it elsewhere
Shiny shelves are stacked high with our wares"

Trophies high, trophies low
This is how to live you know
Could I say no?

Because, each drop of oil is blood
Each leaf in the mouth is a gallon of sweat
Each drop of oil is blood
Through these rivers of earth my sisters and I met

This plot has got hold of my dreams
Its spirit seduced me with ease
But by day it holds fast 'gainst my hands
and it steadfastly resists my plans
Naivety faithfully served
My demons compete with the birds
Should a worrisome conscience take heed?
Or is guilt just the earth's tax on greed?
Taxes high, taxes low
This is how to live you know
Could I say no?

Because each drop of oil is blood
Each leaf in the mouth is a gallon of sweat
Each drop of oil is blood
Through these rivers of earth my sisters and I met

There's a fig tree beside where I ride
catches the mud of the rising tide
If I opened the door to your four wheel drive
could I rest in the dry for a while?
Could we cover our new found shame
at the way we confused the rain?
Or lift up our elbows and poke out our eyes;
who's to blame when everything's fine?
Brollies high, Brollies low
This is how to live you know
Could I say "no"?

Because each drop of oil is blood
Each drop of oil is blood

Come Home

Let sleep,
sleep be your medicine
Let the sheets
fold you away
Leave your clothes
to rest with your maladies
Come home

Let food,
food be your medicine
Let your tongue
heal you alive
Feed your heart
not your misery
Come home

Let truth,
truth be your medicine
It ebbs and it flows
it blows to the side
No steady rock
still transient harmony
Come home

If you wait
wait for this blessing
As you wear
out the floor
Half awake
suspended in bravery
Walk

Lyric Page Dedications:
Packer's Field for everyone who was involved in trying to keep that space open to all. I'm sorry I didn't manage to write a more happy ending. FFI: www.packersfield.org.uk
Chasing Hope for Cath, who says she's singing it as she cycles around Eastern Europe in all her ginger loveliness. You might as well know the words, girl.
Vertigo for Rona, who sings that she's "more scared of tights than the trouble they cause", and I wish I'd written that in the original.
Plot for Allotment Gardeners and food growers everywhere, and also particularly for Ella, for making me grin by pestering me to sing it again.
Come Home, it turns out, is for someone new each time I sing it, but for some of the original inspiration, thank you to Momie, and to Bob, who once said to me: "When things get to much, take your troubles out and walk them."
